Rep Kaufman talks taxes including online sales tax

At a recent public Forum in Lexington Rep Jay Kaufman discussed his revenue reform priorities for the upcoming Legislative year. Top on his list was the so called Main Street Fairness Act which would make paying the state sales tax on internet purchases mandatory, making Massachusetts the 25th state to pass such a law. And in keeping with his targeted approach to taxation, Rep Kaufman is looking to expand the property tax Circuit breaker to assist low-income seniors and "others."

Here is a link to the editorial in Tuesday, 8/23, Boston Herald www.bostonherald.com/news/opinion/editorials/view/2011_0823taxing_summer_for_pols/ with the infamous quote: "Rep. Jay Kaufman (D-Lexington), who co-chairs the Committee on Revenue, told the State House News Service that there is “considerable demand” for the legislation in Massachusetts.

But that demand sure as hell isn’t coming from consumers, who stood in long lines and circled shopping mall parking lots for ages just a few weeks ago — and it wasn’t because a 6.25 percent discount is such a fantastic deal."

The editorial ended with the quote: "Democrats keep saying we need another round of stimulus to spur consumer spending and job creation, but slapping a new tax on purchases is hardly the way to coax consumers out of hibernation."

So how do you feel about this? Send a note to your rep or senator and make sure your opinion is heard - loud and clear!
